TRIAL

frame

frame

noun

The one sentence restatement of what a company actually is: the layer it sits on, the people it serves, and the mechanism that compounds.

IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

Ask a founder what their company does and you get a paragraph borrowed from the pitch deck. Ask TRIAL and you get one sentence: the layer, the people, the mechanism. A frame reads like this: a billing layer for freelance therapists that compounds through insurance claim data nobody else has access to.

The layer names where in the stack you actually sit, infrastructure, workflow tool, or marketplace, because each layer has different economics and different clock speeds. The people name the exact buyer, not a market size slide, an actual human with an actual budget line. The mechanism names what accumulates from use, because that is the only part of the sentence that predicts whether the company still exists in three years.

Most founders resist the frame because it is smaller than their pitch. A pitch says we are building the operating system for small business. A frame says we are an invoicing tool for 2 to 10 person landscaping crews that gets better as it learns local material pricing. The frame is less exciting and more true, and true is what survives contact with a market.

The frame also exposes category confusion fast. If a founder cannot state their mechanism in under ten words, there usually is not one yet, and the company is a feature set waiting for a moat rather than a business with one. TRIAL treats a missing mechanism as a finding, not a formatting issue.

Reframing does not mean shrinking ambition. Stripe's early frame was a payments API for developers who hated Authorize.net's documentation. That sentence undersold what Stripe became, but it was accurate on day one, and accuracy on day one is what let them build the actual compounding layer, developer trust and integration lock in, before they said a word about being infrastructure for the internet economy.

Write your frame in one sentence before you write anything else. If it takes three sentences, you have three companies or zero.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A team pitched themselves as an AI powered logistics platform. TRIAL's frame reduced it to: a load matching tool for regional trucking dispatchers that compounds through a private database of shipper reliability scores. The founders kept the pitch deck language for investors and used the frame internally to decide what to build next.

WHAT NOBODY PUTS ON A LANDING PAGE

The frame is usually smaller and less fundable sounding than the pitch, and founders often hide it from their own investors.

QUESTIONS

Isn't the frame just an elevator pitch?
No. An elevator pitch sells. A frame diagnoses. It is meant for the founder's own clarity, not for a room of investors.
What if my mechanism is just network effects, is that specific enough?
Name which side of the network compounds and why a new entrant cannot bootstrap the same side cheaply. Network effects is a category, not a mechanism.
Can the frame change over time?
Yes, and it should. Reframe every time you find a new mechanism that actually compounds, usually after 12 to 18 months of real usage data.
