unfair asset
unfair asset
The thing you have that nobody else has, the single question no automated market scan can ever answer for you.
IN PLAIN LANGUAGE
TRIAL's intake asks one question before anything else: what do you have that nobody else has. Not what you are good at, not your team's resume line, the actual asset. Ten years running a dental clinic's back office. A cousin who owns 40 percent of the regional trucking permits in Ohio. A dataset of 200,000 labeled defect photos from a factory job nobody else worked.
This question exists because every other part of a startup evaluation can be automated. Market size, competitor pricing, funding history, all scrapeable. The unfair asset cannot be scraped because it lives in your specific biography, and that is exactly why it is worth more than any of the scrapeable data. A scan can tell you the market is 400 million dollars. Only you know you already have relationships with 30 of the buyers in it.
Founders routinely undersell their unfair asset because it feels like cheating to mention it, or because it feels too boring to be strategic. It is not cheating. Airbnb's early unfair asset was not a clever idea, it was Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia photographing listings themselves in New York because nobody else would bother to do that unscalable work. The asset was willingness to do something ugly and specific that a generic team would skip.
An unfair asset needs to do real work in the business, not just sit in the founder bio. If you worked at an insurance company for eight years but your product has nothing to do with insurance, that history is a credential, not an asset. The test is whether removing the asset from the plan would break the plan. If the company survives without it, it was never load bearing.
TRIAL weighs the unfair asset against the playground and the frame together. A weak asset in an empty playground can still work. A strong asset pointed at the wrong frame gets wasted, like a founder with deep hospital procurement relationships building a consumer fitness app instead of a hospital supply tool.
Name the asset specifically, with a number if you can. Eight years, forty contacts, one exclusive contract. Vague assets like passion or hustle do not count, and TRIAL will say so.
A founder with no coding background had spent six years managing purchasing for a chain of 22 urgent care clinics. Her unfair asset was not technical skill, it was a signed vendor list and direct phone numbers to procurement heads at 40 other clinics. That list became the first 40 customers before the product had a real UI.
Most applicants list their asset as their team or their idea, and both of those answers get flagged as missing an actual asset.
QUESTIONS
- What if I genuinely have no unfair asset yet?
- Then the honest move is to spend three to six months acquiring one, a part time job in the industry, an unpaid pilot with a real buyer, before building the product. Building without one usually means competing on execution speed alone, which rarely holds.
- Does capital count as an unfair asset?
- Only if it is large relative to the playground and comes with patience most competitors do not have. A 2 million dollar pre seed is not unfair against a market where incumbents have raised 80 million.
- Can two founders combine assets?
- Yes, and this is often the strongest version, one founder with domain relationships and one with a technical build speed advantage neither could achieve alone.
